The investment in the storage infrastructure has to translate into measurable, tangible benefits to the business. Similarly, the business should be able to attribute costs to different service levels.

Consolidation and Abstraction provide the means to rapidly respond to changes in business needs and the ability to deliver storage resources at variable cost, depending on the level of service required. These levels of service are usually described as tiers, for example, 1 - 4 or Platinum - Bronze. Each tier has a different set of service characteristics and cost.

True Utility Storage remains someway off but many of the building blocks are being delivered in the technologies that comprise Consolidation, Abstraction and Service Management. In addition, a range of outsourced and remote management services is providing pay-per-use solutions for areas like backup and recovery.

A key development to delivering a cost effective Utility model is automation. Policy-based management is already available, for example, backup and recovery, server virtualisation and file virtualisation. These are tried and tested processes that deliver real value in terms of improving productivity and availability. In addition Capacity on Demand arrangements have been available to the large storage user for some time.
