IBM readies her Power Systems-series of Unix servers for the coming of the Power7-processor.
The new processor delivers two to three times the performance in comparison with recent Power6-systems.

Although the performance increases greatly, the amount of energy used stays nearly the same.
To accompany the arrival of the Power7-processor, the big blue also announced a new systems-management application called VMControl. This application should enable the users to manage their virtual servers more easily.

A thousand virtual machines
Beside of energy savings, the Power7-processors enables the customer to accommodate
one thousand virtual machines on one single Power System.

This all sounds amazing, although the new processor is expected to arrive at the end of the second quarter in 2010. Therefore IBM has set-up an upgrade-path for customers to upgrade their Power6 based systems Power 595 and Power 570. The upgrade is realized by replacing only the processor and system controllers

According to IBM, Power-systems can be safely purchased because of this easy upgrade
Even applications are easily imported into the new upgraded Power7-system.
Big Blue prevents with her upgrade-path that companies hold their investments until the new Power7-systems arrive. Therefore keeping current investments in Power6-Systems a solid decision.

Management
Management will also be greatly improved with VMControl, the system-management application IBM has announced.
With VMControl companies are getting an advanced way to manage and monitor their virtual resources.
New virtual servers are easily created, moved and removed.
This application will also support  IBM’s System z mainframes, System x servers, BladeCenter blades running AIX or Linux.

VmControl will have different versions, which include a free version that holds all basic functionalities.
With this, users can monitor and manage their virtual servers.
The Standard Edition is not for free en delivers organizations more functionality like create a running image.
This image can later on be implemented as new model for new virtual servers.
